Why is Imran Khan getting so much attention?
Former PM Imran Khan was ousted from power last year, allegedly at the behest of the Pakistani Army and his political foes. Some political observers say that Khan was too close to Russia and this didn’t go down well with the United States.Ever since his removal, Khan has been opposing the Army’s role in Pakistani politics. Every government in Pakistan must get the support of the Pakistan Army to stay in power.
Khan’s continued opposition to Army has attracted several criminal charges, the most recent being corruption in a trust. The Army also persuaded the Pakistan Government convict Khan under the Army Act. If convicted, Imran Khan can also receive capital punishment.
A worsening economy
Pakistan’s economy is performing badly for many years. The Pakistan Rupee is one of the worst performing currencies in the world and has declined more than 20% in the past few months.
The arrest of Imran Khan and the events that followed it have affected Pakistan’s economy even more.
