India-Canada Realation: India confirmed that the suspension on all new visa requests from Canadian residents does not just apply to those who submit their requests from within India. Any new visa requests from Canadian citizens, regardless of where they are applying from, are subject to the suspension.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA), Canadian citizens are not permitted to apply for an Indian visa, regardless of where they currently reside. Arindam Bagchi, a spokesman for the MEA, said that Canadians applying from other nations will not also need a visa.

Early in the day, MEA announced the permanent suspension of its Canadian visa services owing to potential security threats. Following concerns of inconsistencies in how officials at the High Commission and other consulates stationed across Canada were operating, this decision was made.

Security threats faced by High Commission and Consulates in Canada

“You are aware of the security threats being faced by our High Commission and Consulates in Canada. This has disrupted their normal functioning. Accordingly, our High Commission and Consulates are temporarily unable to process visa applications. We will be reviewing the situation on a regular basis,” Arindam Bagchi said.

Bagchi said while speaking about security concerns at the Consulate in Canada, “We have always believed that it is the host government’s responsibility to provide security. Some places we have our own security posture also. But, I don’t want to discuss security measures in public. That’s not an appropriate situation”.

Canada a safe haven:

“Safe haven is being provided in Canada. We want the Canadian government not to do so and take action against those who have terrorism charges or send them to India to face justice. We have sought extradition of around 20-25 individuals over the years, but the response has not been helpful at all,” Bagchi said.

Days after Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau accused Indian operatives of “potential” involvement in the killing of a Khalistani separatist in June, India suspended visa services in Canada.

Indian visa services have been “suspended until further notice,” according to a private company that was hired to undertake preliminary screening of Canadian visa applicants.
