In a report released on pollution, India’s condition has been described as very bad. Switzerland’s IQ Air has said in a report released on Tuesday that out of the top 10 polluted cities in the world, 6 are Indian cities. Not only this, if we talk about the 20 most polluted cities, then 14 cities of India come in it.
India has 39 of the world’s top 50 polluted cities and 61 of the top 100
According to this report, India was the eighth most polluted country in the world in 2022. It was in fifth place in the previous year 2021. This report has been issued after studying 30,000 ground-based monitoring of 131 countries of the world and data received from the government.
The PM 2.5 level has dropped to 53.3 micrograms per cubic metre, which is still 10 times the World Health Organisation’s safe limit, the report said.
Swiss firm IQ Air has released it on Tuesday under the name ‘World Air Quality Report’. This is based on the PM 2.5 level. Data for 131 countries is derived from more than 30,000 ground-based monitors. These are either government or non-government operated. Data has been collected for more than 7,300 cities around the world.
PM 2.5 is one of the major factors of pollution. Other sources of pollution are industrial units, coal-fired power plants and biomass.
Lahore in Pakistan and Hotan in China are the top two most polluted cities. After these two cities comes the number of Indian cities. Rajasthan’s Bhiwadi is third and Delhi is fourth. Delhi’s PM 2.5 level at 92.6 micrograms is nearly 20 times the safe limit. Well, Delhi is technically not the most polluted capital anymore.
Delhi has so far been the world’s most polluted capital, but this year’s report has drawn a distinction between the capital of ‘Greater’ Delhi and New Delhi. Both are in the top 10 but New Delhi is second and the world’s most polluted capital is now N’Djamena in Chad. It is also worth noting that Najmena has a population of less than one million while New Delhi has a population of over four million.
But there is good news as well. Delhi’s neighboring cities of Gurugram, Noida, Ghaziabad and Faridabad have seen a drop in pollution levels. From 34 per cent in Gurugram to 21 per cent in Faridabad. In Delhi it has declined by hardly 8 per cent.
