Indian-origin Suella Braverman wins first Queen Elizabeth II award

Suella Braverman, the British Home Secretary of Indian origin, was awarded the inaugural recipient of the Queen Elizabeth II Woman of the Year award at a ceremony in London.

At the Asian Achievers Awards (AAA) 2022 ceremony, which honors the late king who recently died away, the 42-year-old barrister who was elevated to the Cabinet earlier this month by British Prime Minister Liz Truss said it was the “honor of her life” to take on the new post.

The Goan-origin father Christie Fernandes and Tamil mother Uma’s daughter Braverman, who was born in London, submitted a recorded message to the ceremony where her parents accepted the prize on her behalf.

“My mum and dad came to this country from Kenya and Mauritius in the 1960s,” said Braverman in her message.

“They’ve been proud members of our Asian community and I was born in Wembley, the heart of the Asian community, and to be elected to serve in the UK Parliament and now to serve our phenomenal and amazing and welcoming country as

Home Secretary is the honor of my life. I hope to do you proud,” she said.

This year, Braverman, a British barrister of Indian origin, replaced her fellow Indian-origin colleague Priti Patel in the position of Home Secretary.

Suella Braverman was chosen by Liz Truss, the new British prime minister, to serve as her home secretary. From 2020 until 2022, Suella Braverman served as attorney general.

From January until November of last year, she served as the Department for Exiting the European Union’s Parliamentary Under Secretary of State.

In May 2015, Suella won the election to represent Fareham as a Conservative.
