A powerful 7.7-magnitude Indonesia earthquake struck off the coast of Flores early Saturday, August 15, sending residents rushing out of buildings as violent shaking spread across parts of the region.

The Indonesia earthquake triggers panic across Flores
The shallow earthquake struck near Flores in East Nusa Tenggara, with the epicenter reported about 68 kilometres north-northwest of Ende. The strong tremors were felt across several areas, causing panic among residents. Videos circulating online showed buildings shaking and parts of structures collapsing. People were seen running into open areas as they tried to escape falling debris. Hospitals also moved patients outside as a precaution following the intense tremors.

The visuals from the stricken regions portrayed the immediate effect of the earthquake that hit Indonesia. Some buildings looked like they had been crushed by the earthquake as people were moving away from the buildings, looking for a safe place. According to an article published in the Hindustan Times, some social media visuals lacked any independent verification of their authenticity. The initial news also pointed to damage on houses and public infrastructure.
Deaths reported as damage assessment continues
At least two people were initially confirmed dead following the earthquake, while reports of injuries and structural damage continued to emerge. The full extent of the destruction was still being assessed as emergency teams responded across affected areas.
