Ali Shadmani, Iran's wartime Chief of Staff and a well-known commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was said to have died in an Israeli bombardment on June 17, 2025. This is a huge step forward in the fight between Israel and Iran. The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) confirmed the targeted operation, adding that killing Shadmani was part of their ongoing efforts to break up Iran's military leadership.
Ali Shadmani had just been named acting head of Iran's armed forces a few days prior, after Major General Gholam Ali Rashid was killed in an Israeli bombing. People knew Shadmani for his important role at the Khatam al-Anbiya Central Headquarters. He was in charge of directing Iran's military during wartime and was regarded to be a very important figure who was close to Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei.
Second high-ranking Iranian official slain in less than a week.
This is the second high-profile killing of a high-ranking Iranian military officer in less than a week. The IDF added that Shadmani was a significant part of Iran's command structure, calling him the "wartime operational head" and one of the Supreme Leader's most trusted military aides. Reports indicated that the airstrike hit a protected area in central Tehran where strategic talks were going on.
The Israeli military said the attack was a success, although Iranian officials have not yet publicly announced that Shadmani is dead. Iranian state media has, however, stated that some IRGC officials were maimed or killed in the most recent fights.
Rising Tensions and Fears Around the World
The killing of Ali Shadmani is likely to make matters much worse between the two powers in the region. Iran has already fired multiple missiles and drones in reaction to the attack on Rashid. A lot of Israeli cities are on high alert right now. There have been reports of civilian casualties on both sides, and in locations with a lot of danger, significant evacuations are commencing.
People all throughout the world are getting more and more frightened about how quickly things are getting worse. India and other countries have advised their citizens to leave Tehran. At the G7 Summit, there were differing ideas about how to handle the increasing conflict.
