NASA capable of recycling water from urine and sweat in space

NASA: American space agency NASA says it can reclaim 98% of water from sweat and urine in space. This claim follows a demonstration in the ISS’ Environmental Control and Life Support System (ECLSS).

ISS stands for the International Space Station.

Last week, the National Aeronautical Space and Administration said that the agency was “developing life support systems that can regenerate or recycle consumables such as food, air, and water and is testing them on the International Space Station (ISS).”

Quoting NASA, Hindustan Times says that the ECLSS has demonstrated that it can recover 98% of water from urine and sweat.

About ECLSS

The ECLSS is a set of hardware that comprises a water recovery system and Water Processor Assembly. The system captures wastewater and then sends it to the Assembly, producing drinkable water.

A notable component of the ECLSS is the advanced dehumidifier which traps sweat and moisture in the cabin and recycles them into water.

UPA OR Urine Processor Assembly

This machine uses vacuum distillation technology to extract water from urine. However, some brine accompanies this recycled water.

Brine is sodium chloride.

The ISS has a Brine Processor Assembly and the space station has been using this equipment’s efficacy in microgravity.

Recent experiments have shown that this Assembly can extract 98% water from brine.

Taking the brine produced by the UPA, the Brine Processor Assembly runs the solution through a special membrane. The BPA also blows dry and warm air over the brine. This process evaporates the water which is collected by the space station’s water collection system. The captured evaporated water is later converted into recycled water.

According to NASA, the International Space Station has been occupied continuously since 2000. Seven crew members live on the station and conduct various experiments.
