Nepal Earthquake: In a tragic event, a powerful 6.4 magnitude earthquake struck western Nepal shortly before midnight on Friday, resulting in the loss of at least 157 lives and leaving 190 individuals injured. The epicenter of the earthquake was located in Ramidanda, Jajarkot district, approximately 550 kilometers from Kathmandu, with its tremors being felt as far as New Delhi and parts of northern India.

The regions of Jajarkot and Rukum West bore the brunt of the disaster, with Jajarkot experiencing 105 fatalities and an equal number of injuries, while Rukum West reported 52 deaths and 85 injuries. This earthquake, which occurred at 11:47 pm local time, stands as Nepal’s deadliest since the catastrophic events of 2015, when two earthquakes measuring 7.8 and 7.3 on the Richter scale claimed the lives of approximately 8,000 people.

Officials have expressed concerns that the death toll may continue to rise, as rescue efforts were impeded by landslides that blocked access to the affected hilly areas. Harischandra Sharma, the assistant chief district officer of Jajarkot, stated that “It took the search team longer to reach the affected areas as the roads were blocked because of landslides.”
