Israel Palestine Conflict: Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu announced on Wednesday (local time) that Israel is getting ready to launch a ground invasion of Gaza with the goal of eliminating Hamas, the terrorist organisation that rules the Palestinian territory. He did not, however, provide the operation's date or any other specifics.
Centrist Opposition Leader Key in Ground Invasion Decision
The head of a centrist opposition party is among the members of the government's special war cabinet, which Netanyahu said would decide whether to send Israeli forces into Gaza in a televised announcement, according to news agency Reuters. "Simultaneously, we are preparing for a ground invasion. I will not elaborate on when, how or how many. I will also not elaborate on the various calculations we are making, which the public is mostly unaware of and that is how things should be," he said.
Thousands of Terrorists Eliminated as Israel Faces Existential Battle
Netanyahu declared that "thousands of terrorists and this was only the beginning" had been murdered by Israel. Netanyahu called October 7, the day Hamas started unprecedented air, sea, and land attacks on Israel, a "black day of our history" during his speech. According to The Times of Israel, he declared that Israel ought to prevail in what he called "a fight for our existence."
Promises Answers After War, Focuses on Victory
The Israeli prime minister said that all of his colleagues, including himself, would "have to answer, but only when the war was over" in reference to the security lapses that allowed Hamas to carry out its brutal attacks. "I am responsible for securing the future of the country. And right now, my job is to lead the State of Israel and the people to a crushing victory over our enemies," he was quoted as saying by The Times of Israel.
Humanitarian Crisis Deepens in Gaza as Biden Administration Pushes for Ceasefire
Israel launched lethal airstrikes on the Gaza Strip in retaliation for the Hamas attacks, killing over 1,400 Palestinians. The Gaza health ministry, under Hamas control, reports that over 6,500 Palestinians have lost their lives as a result of the bombardment. Concerned that the violence was causing a growing humanitarian catastrophe, with water and supplies of food and medication running low in the war-torn Palestinian enclave, the Biden administration is calling for a "humanitarian pause" in the fighting to allow additional relief to reach Gaza, according to NBC News.
Biden Reaffirms U.S. Support for Israel, Calls for Protection of Civilians
President Joe Biden of the United States reaffirmed Washington's unwavering support for Israel during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Anthony Albanese of Australia. He emphasised the necessity for Israel to "do everything in its power to protect innocent civilians" and the "increase" in the flow of humanitarian aid into Gaza. Declaring that Israelis and Palestinians "equally deserve to live side by side in safety, dignity, and in peace," Biden outlined the framework for a two-state solution.
World Leaders at UN Security Council Seek Temporary Ceasefire in Israel-Hamas Conflict
Days after world leaders convened at the UN Security Council to demand a temporary cessation of the deadly conflict between Israel and Hamas and to urge for increased aid into the Gaza Strip, the request for a "humanitarian pause" was made.
