China: China’s health authorities have reported that they have not found any novel or unusual pathogens, a day after the World Health Organisation (WHO) requested additional information from China regarding a rise in respiratory illnesses and reported clusters of pneumonia in children. Via the International Health Regulations mechanism, the health agency had requested laboratory results, clinical and epidemiologic data.
China’s Analysis of Covid-19 Restriction Lift and Pathogen Spread
China’s data indicates that the lifting of Covid-19 restrictions and the spread of known pathogens, such as mycoplasma pneumonia, a common bacterial infection that primarily affects younger children and has been circulating since May, are responsible for the rise in respiratory illnesses. Since October, there has been a spread of adenovirus, influenza, and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV).
Chinese Officials Address Respiratory Illness Surge
This development follows a press conference held on November 13 by Chinese officials from the National Health Commission, who announced a rise in the prevalence of respiratory illnesses. Concerns concerning the transparency of reporting on the first Covid-19 cases that surfaced in Wuhan, central China, in late 2019 have been raised against both China and the WHO.
WHO’s Established Partnerships and Networks in China
Additionally, the WHO had requested more data from China regarding patterns in the spread of recognised pathogens and the strain on medical systems. According to the health agency, it has established technical partnerships and networks in China that allow it to communicate with doctors and scientists. China, meanwhile, reported clusters of pneumonia cases in children from member states, including China, and stated that it was “routine” to request information on increases in respiratory illnesses.
