North Korea executes 2 minors for watching K-dramas

North Korea: According to reports, North Korea murdered two high school students for watching and widely disseminating South Korean drama series among their peers. Viewing and distributing K-dramas is against the law in Korea.

Why were they executed?

In a rare exhibition of retribution in the Kim Jong Un dictatorship, the youths were murdered for watching and sharing South Korean movies, according to Radio Free Asia, citing two witnesses.
The youngsters met in early October at a high school in North Korea’s Ryanggang Province, which shares a border with China, where they watched multiple Korean and American drama productions, according to The Independent, citing Korean media.

Taken before the public, sentenced to death, and then shot

According to the account, the teens were taken before the public, sentenced to death, and then shot down by officials at a city airfield.

The “crimes” committed by the teenagers were “evil,” according to the Korean regime, and residents in the neighbourhood were compelled to see the execution.

In 2020, North Korea implemented a rule overseeing ideological and cultural instruments, as well as a prohibition on outside information and influence, in response to the increased popularity of Korean dramas and music.
To avoid penalties or, worse, incarceration, South Korean shows are smuggled on flash drives and watched behind closed doors.
