OIC's Extraordinary Gathering in Jeddah as Tensions Soar in Gaza Conflict, Details

Israel Palestine Conflict: Following an eight-day battle between Hamas and Israel that has resulted in hundreds of deaths and injuries, Saudi Arabia has convened an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation's (OIC) foreign ministers to examine the violence in Gaza. According to Arab News, the meeting will take place in Jeddah on Wednesday.

OIC's Unprecedented Call to Action

A grouping of 57 Muslim nations make up the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation. In a statement, the OIC said that the meeting will “address the escalating military situation in Gaza and its environs as well as the deteriorating conditions that endanger the lives of civilians and the overall security and stability of the region”. An "open-ended" special ministerial conference was requested by Saudi Arabia to review the military buildup in Gaza and its environs.

2215 Lives Lost in Israel's Ongoing Hamas Offensive

At least 2,215 individuals have been killed in Israel's ongoing campaign to destroy the Hamas organisation. In preparation for an anticipated ground invasion, tens of thousands of soldiers have been stationed nearby. It comes after the terror group's onslaught on Israel on October 7 that saw the largest escalation in hostilities in decades and resulted in the deaths of hundreds of people. Approximately 1,500 Hamas fighters were allegedly killed inside Israel, according to Israel.

OIC's Emergency Meeting Amidst Israel-Hamas Conflict

The Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) had earlier been called to an urgent conference as violence between Israeli and Hamas soldiers raged. On Monday, an Iranian Foreign Ministry spokesperson said, “Tehran has called for an emergency meeting of the Organisation of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) to discuss regional developments.” The largest attack on Israel in decades by Hamas comes at the same time as US-backed efforts to pressure Saudi Arabia to normalise relations with Israel in exchange for a defence agreement between Washington and Riyadh. A move like that would put a stop to Saudi Arabia's recent warming up to Iran.
