Pakistan Afghanistan War: Taliban Claims Pakistani Air Force Pilot Held, Will Pak Lose to Afg After India, Asim Munir’s Army Toothless?

The Taliban claim they downed a Pakistani fighter jet and captured its pilot, a charge Islamabad denies. While Pakistan holds clear military advantages under Asim Munir, the conflict risks turning into a prolonged insurgency rather than a swift victory for either side.

Pakistan Afghanistan War:Tensions between Pakistan and Afghanistan have erupted into open military confrontation, with the Taliban claiming they shot down a Pakistani fighter jet and captured its pilot alive near Jalalabad. The dramatic claim comes amid one of the most serious cross-border escalations in recent years.

According to reports cited by India Today and The Guardian, Pakistan launched airstrikes on more than 20 targets across Afghanistan, including Kabul and Kandahar, declaring what officials described as an “open war” against the Taliban regime.

Taliban’s Claim: Pilot Captured Alive

Taliban spokespersons said their forces downed a Pakistani jet in Jalalabad’s sixth district. They alleged that the pilot parachuted to safety but was captured alive shortly after landing. If verified, this would mark the second such incident in recent days.

However, Pakistan’s foreign ministry has strongly denied the claim, calling it “totally untrue.” There has been no independent confirmation, and conflicting narratives continue amid the fog of war.

Why Did the Conflict Escalate?

The fighting follows long-simmering disputes over the Durand Line border and Islamabad’s accusations that Kabul shelters militants linked to the Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP). Afghan authorities, in turn, accuse Pakistan of violating sovereignty through repeated air incursions.

Pakistan claims its operations eliminated 274 Taliban fighters, while Afghan officials say they have captured Pakistani soldiers and inflicted heavy damage.

Asim Munir’s Army: Toothless or Dominant?

Under Army Chief Asim Munir, Pakistan has launched what it calls Operation Ghazab lil-Haq, reportedly destroying Afghan posts and armoured assets. Critics question Munir’s broader strategic record, especially after tensions with India and unrest in Balochistan.

Yet militarily, Pakistan maintains significant advantages. The Pakistan Air Force controls the skies, and Islamabad initiated the large-scale strikes. Unlike past stand-offs with India, this conflict pits Pakistan’s conventional military against Taliban ground forces with limited air capability.

The risk is not immediate defeat, but a drawn-out, destabilising war that neither side can decisively win. International pressure and internal Afghan dynamics may ultimately shape how far the escalation goes.
