Pakistan’s food crisis worsens, people attempt to raid wheat trucks

People have lately been spotted chasing a wheat truck on foot and on bikes, risking their lives to obtain a bag of wheat as Pakistan’s food crisis gets worse.

Food Crisis in Pakistan worsens

Chairman of National Equality Party Jammu Kashmir Gilgit Baltistan and Ladakh (JKGBL), Professor Sajjad Raja shared the video on Twitter and said,
“This is not a motorcycle rally, but people in Pakistan are chasing a truck loaded with flour, in the hope that they will buy just one packet of flour. Do we have any future in Pakistan? This video is just a glimpse of what is happening in Pakistan.”

In the footage, people can be seen pursuing a truck that is towing flour sacks. One of the men approaches the wheat truck closer, displays some cash, and requests a packet of flour.

One of the difficulties Pakistan is dealing with as its economy collapses is the skyrocketing price of flour. After a price hike of Rs 150, a 15 kg bag of flour is now being offered for Rs 2,050. So far, in just two weeks, the cost of a 15 kg flour bag has increased by Rs 300. However, according to agenies, pricing on the open market are unchanged.

Additionally, the government has failed to supply the necessities of life for its residents, forcing them to utilise plastic bags as LPG (cooking gas) containers.

As horrifying as it may sound, Pakistanis in the Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province are using plastic bags to store LPG because the vendors had to reduce the delivery due to a drop in the stock of cooking gas cylinders.

IMF refuses to disperse funds to Pakistan , leaveing Pakistani Economy in dire strairts

Cash-strapped Pakistan is in severe need of assistance. In order to cover foreign payments, successive governments have failed to strengthen bilateral or multilateral help.

Pakistan’s economy is in serious difficulties with extraordinarily high inflation, dangerously low foreign exchange reserves, and international lenders like the International Monetary Fund (IMF) reluctant to distribute additional funding.

Due to a sharp increase in food costs, Pakistan’s inflation rate hit 24.5% in December of last year.

Many Pakistanis are now finding it difficult to afford wheat, which is a staple grain for the vast majority of Pakistanis. According to the Pakistan Bureau of Statistics, its costs surged by over 57% while those of wheat flour rose by a similar 41%.
