Children in Russia and Ukraine have suffered the hardest, Reports

A study of data from 22 countries was used by UNICEF to reach its findings. Children in Russia and Ukraine have suffered the hardest since Moscow attacked its neighbour in February 2022, according to AFP reports.

With an additional 2.8 million children now living in households below the poverty line as a result of the Ukraine war and a cost-of-living crisis in the region, UNICEF discovered that Russia is responsible for nearly three-quarters of the overall increase in the number of children living in poverty.

It was also mentioned that Ukraine, which has the second-highest percentage of poor children, is home to an additional 500,000 of them. Romania came in second place, with an additional 110,000 kids living in poverty.

Children across the region are getting swept up in the tragic aftermath of this war, according to Afshan Khan, regional director for UNICEF in Europe and Central Asia, according to AFP.

The high increase in child poverty, it continued, “will almost likely result in lost lives, missed learning, and lost futures if we don’t support these children and families now.”
According to the agency, poorer families must spend a larger percentage of their income on food and gasoline, leaving less for their children’s healthcare and education. They are also “more at risk of violence, exploitation, and abuse,” the agency added.

According to UNICEF, this might result in an additional 4,500 children dying before turning one and an additional 117,000 kids quitting school this year.
