Russian missile strikes kill 4 in eastern Ukraine

Russia Ukraine War: At least 4 people including a child were killed when Russian missiles hit a restaurant in Kramatorsk, eastern Ukraine. India Today says 42 people were wounded in the strike.

The first missile hit a restaurant and the second struck a village on the outskirts of Kramatorsk.

Media sources also say Russian missiles struck a building in Kremenchuk in central Ukraine. However, no injuries were reported. Kremenchuk is 230 miles west of the Russian front in Ukraine.

The Kremenchuk attack happened exactly a year after Russian missiles hit a shopping mall in the city killing 20 people.

Possible target

Kramatorsk may be the next target of a planned Russian attack in the region shortly. The city has faced several Russian missile strikes in the past. In 2022, Moscow launched an attack on the Kramatorsk railway station that killed 42 people.

Russia denies it intentionally attacked civilian sites in Kramatorsk. However, it describes some of its actions in Ukraine as special military operations, says India Today.

Tightening control in Donbas

German news agency DW says that Russia wants to tighten its control in Donbas by capturing new cities in the area.

Donbas is important because it produces strategic minerals and is a major transportation hub.

Even though most of the Luhansk area is under the control of Russian troops, three cities still remain with Ukraine – Sloviansk, Kramatorsk and Bakhmut.

Ukraine is trying to dislodge Russia from key positions in Donbas. Last week, Kyiv launched its much-awaited counteroffensive in eastern Ukraine.

Last week also saw a one-day revolt of PMC Wagner against the Russian military leadership. Western observers say this revolt exposes weaknesses in President Putin’s leadership.

The Kramatorsk attack comes days after Wagner decided to stop its march to Moscow and after its chief decided to leave the South Military District at Rostov.
