In a distressing turn of events, Shahzadi, a 33-year-old woman from Uttar Pradesh's Banda district, has been sentenced to death in Abu Dhabi. She is currently imprisoned in Al Wathba jail, accused of causing the death of a child who was under her care.
Last-Minute Legal Intervention
Initial reports suggested that Shahzadi was set to be executed within 24 hours, causing immense distress to her family. However, the Indian Embassy in Abu Dhabi clarified that a review petition has been filed, and the case remains under consideration.
A Final Phone Call to Family
In a rare act of leniency, Abu Dhabi jail authorities granted Shahzadi a phone call with her family. During this emotional conversation, she consoled her loved ones, hinting that this might be their final exchange. Shahzadi also urged her family to withdraw a case they had filed against the parents of the deceased child in Banda.
The Journey That Led to Her Arrest
Shahzadi’s life took a tragic turn in 2021, when she moved to Abu Dhabi in search of better opportunities. A resident of Goyra Mugli village, she was reportedly lured by Uzair, a man from Agra, who promised her a luxurious life. Reports indicate that Uzair "sold" Shahzadi to an Emirati couple as a domestic worker.
Tasked with taking care of the couple’s young son, Shahzadi found herself at the center of a legal nightmare when the child unexpectedly died. The couple accused her of negligence and filed a case against her, leading to her arrest and subsequent death sentence.
Family Claims Medical Negligence
Shahzadi and her father, Shabbir Khan, maintain that the child’s death was due to medical negligence and not her fault. However, the couple’s allegations resulted in her conviction. Following the verdict, Shabbir Khan pleaded with the Indian government and local administration to intervene and save his daughter’s life.
A Desperate Plea for Help
On February 16, Shahzadi’s family received a heartbreaking call from Abu Dhabi. She revealed that she was being kept in isolation and had been informed by prison authorities that she would be executed soon. When asked about her last wish, Shahzadi requested one final conversation with her family.
Now, her parents are making a last-ditch appeal to the Indian government and the President, proclaiming her innocence and seeking urgent intervention to prevent her execution.
