Sudan violence: Days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar spoke with his counterpart in Saudi Arabia, the Arab nation has announced safe evacuation of 91 foreign nationals, including Indians, from violence-hit Sudan.

The Saudi foreign ministry said in a statement on Saturday it has so far evacuated 91 stranded foreign nationals. Out of the 91 evacuated, 66 were from friendly countries, including India, it said. It has also evacuated Bangladeshi nationals as well from conflict-ridden Sudan.

Jaishankar rings up Arab counterparts

This comes days after External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar held talks with his counterparts in Saudi Arabia and the UAE. Both countries had assured their "practical support on the ground".

"The number of citizens who were evacuated from friendly countries reached 66, representing the following nationalities - Kuwait, Qatar, UAE, Egypt, Tunisia, Pakistan, India, Bulgaria, Bangladesh, the Philippines, Canada and Burkina Faso," the Saudi foreign minister said in a statement.

In Sudan, the army and the paramilitary Rapid Support Forces (RSF) are engaged in a bloody power struggle between two top generals. This has left hundreds dead across the country. The evacuation comes at a time when both had issued statements to uphold a three-day ceasefire from Friday for Eid al-Fitr.

Power struggle in Sudan

The violence was triggered by disagreement over an internationally backed plan to form a new civilian government four years after the fall of autocrat Omar al-Bashir and two years after the military coup. Both sides accuse the other of thwarting the transition.

Army chief Abdel Fattah al-Burhan and his deputy Mohamed Hamdan Daglo who commands the RSF, have been engaged in a power struggle to take control of the strife-torn country. Cities including capital Khartoum have witnessed heavy gunfire in the streets and many buildings around the army headquarters were engulfed in thick smoke.
