Taiwan lends a helping hand to China over Covid outbreak

Taiwan: President Tsai Ing-wen offered China “necessary support” to help it deal with the significant increase in Covid cases on Sunday, but claimed Chinese military exercises near the island were detrimental to peace and stability.

“As long as there is a need, based on the position of humanitarian care, we are willing to provide the necessary assistance to help more people get out of the pandemic and have a healthy and safe new year,” Tsai Ing-wen stated in her New Year’s address, without elaborating.

After unexpectedly reversing its tight zero-Covid policy in December, China is reeling from a Covid surge triggered by an explosion of cases. After three years of enforcing lockdowns and intensive testing, China opened up, infecting millions, and the number is projected to climb even further.

Conflict was not the solution to problems says Tsai

Tsai repeated her call for discussion with China, stressing that conflict was not the solution to problems.
In his New Year’s message, Chinese President Xi Jinping mentioned Taiwan briefly, saying that people on both sides of the Taiwan Strait “are members of the same family,” but made no mention of attempting to take control of the island.

Taiwan and China have regularly clashed over their various Covid control methods.

After skyrocketing domestic infections last year, China chastised Taiwan for weak pandemic management, while Taiwan accused China of a lack of transparency and attempting to meddle with vaccine shipments to Taiwan, which Beijing denied.
