Turkey Earthquake: According to UN relief chief Martin Griffiths, the current death toll of 28,000 from the devastating earthquake in Turkey and Syria may "double or more."
Griffiths visited to Kahramanmaras on Saturday, a city in southern Turkey that served as the epicentre of the initial 7.8-magnitude earthquake that devastated millions of people's lives on Monday early in the morning.
Speaking to Sky News, Griffiths said, “I think it is difficult to estimate precisely as we need to get under the rubble but I'm sure it will double or more. We haven't really begun to count the number of dead.”
According to medics and officials, 24,617 people have lost their lives in Turkey and 3,574 in Syria as the death toll currently stands at 28,191. Since six days have passed, there is less probability of people under the debris being found alive.
Police detain more than 100 over collapsed buildings
The country's south-eastern provinces of Sanliurfa and Gaziantep experienced multiple buildings to collapse, and police in earthquake-stricken Turkey detained more than 100 people as a result, according to state media.
Contractors are among the people detained, according to the DHA news agency. The severe tremors that struck the area on Monday caused the collapse of around 6,000 buildings, upsetting the public over the poor construction.
After Turkey's Vice President Fuat Oktay said on Saturday that 113 arrest warrants had been issued by the prosecutors over the fall of buildings, police officials are expected to detain more people.
