UK: Rishi Sunak plans to make Maths mandatory for students till the age of 18

UK: In an effort to combat illiteracy and ensure that the UK rivals the greatest educational systems in the world, UK Prime Minister Rishi Sunak will announce plans for all pupils in England to study arithmetic up until the age of 18. According to a story by The Independent, he is anticipated to make the revelation in his first speech of the year. In his lecture, he will issue a warning that employers of the future must be prepared for more demand for analytical abilities.

Sunak’s goal

He will also mention that, in contrast to many other nations, only 50% of students between the ages of 16 and 19 are math majors. Sunak’s goal of assisting in the improvement of Britain’s future includes a focus on numeracy.

Students will take math in some capacity together with other subjects as part of Sunak’s proposed mandatory math programme. This will result in the availability of math up to age 18 through a variety of channels as opposed to only A-levels (Advanced Level qualifications). The UK offers subject-based A-Levels to students who are 16 years old or older.

According to sources in Sunak’s office, Sunak will say, “This is personal for me. Every opportunity I’ve had in life began with the education I was so fortunate to receive. And it’s the single most important reason why I came into politics: to give every child the highest possible standard of education.”

He will also draw attention to the growing importance of analytics and statistics.

“Right now, just half of all 16–19-year-olds study any maths at all. Yet in a world where data is everywhere and statistics underpin every job, our children’s jobs will require more analytical skills than ever before. And letting our children out into the world without those skills is letting our children down.”

The legislation, which would only be applicable to students in England, probably won’t be implemented until after the upcoming election. Right now, surveys are pointing to a Conservative defeat to the Labour party.

Sunak’s attention to numeracy comes as data from the government indicates that roughly 8 million individuals in England have numeracy abilities comparable to those of kindergarteners.
