Ukraine Russia War: India Today has reported that a major dam in Ukraine has collapsed and has forced 42,000 Ukrainians to abandon their homes and seek refuge elsewhere. This dam, which is located in the Russia-controlled Ukrainian territory, is nearly 37 miles upstream of Kherson. It also powers a hydroelectric station which supplies electricity to several parts of Ukraine.
Water levels have risen 3.5 metres in the vicinity of the dam and people were leaving their homes for drier areas. UN Aid officials warn that the situation would worsen in the coming days as more water enters the adjacent towns and villages in the catchment area.
A top US official said that he was unsure whether the dam was sabotaged. Robert Wood, the US deputy ambassador to the UN added that it makes no sense for Ukraine to damage its own dam.
Russia and Ukraine trade charges
Meanwhile, Russia has accused Ukraine of bombing the Soviet-era dam to deflect attention from Kyiv’s failed counteroffensives. On the other hand, Ukraine accused Moscow of committing “ecocide.” According to Reuters, Ukraine’s UN ambassador said Russia had committed a “terrorist act against Ukrainian critical infrastructure.”
No proof was given by either side to the United Nations.
Martin Griffiths of UN Aid said that the dam collapse will have “far-reaching and grave consequences” for Ukrainians living on both sides of the front.UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said that he didn’t have independent information on who burst the dam but called it “another devastating consequence of the Russian invasion of Ukraine.”
What does the UN say?
Many UN Security Council members agreed on Tuesday that this crisis wouldn’t have occurred had Russia not invaded Ukraine last year. The UNSC was meeting after a special request from Moscow and Kyiv.
