Ukraine security council calls for state of emergency

After Germany and Britain, US President Joe Biden announced sanctions on Russia in an address on Tuesday. The sanctions on two Russian financial institutions have effectively cut the country off from Western financing.

This comes after Russian President Vladimir Putin ordered the deployment of troops to the two breakaway regions in eastern Ukraine. On Monday, Russia had recognised the independence of two separatist regions in Ukraine — Donetsk and Lugansk.

As per an earlier update shared by Danilov, each of the country’s regions would be able to select the measures needed, “depending on how necessary they might be”. “What could it be? This could be added enforcement of public order…This could involve limiting certain types of transport, increased vehicle checks, or asking people to show this or that document,” he added.

As tensions with Russia intensify, several western nations have imposed sanctions on the country even as officials warned of further measures in case of an escalation. “To stop Putin from further aggression, we call on partners to impose more sanctions on Russia now,” tweeted Ukrainian Foreign Minister Dmytro Kuleba on Wednesday.

Meanwhile, an Air India flight, carrying around 240 Indian nationals, landed at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport late last night, after taking off from the eastern European nation’s capital Kyiv.
