United States: Taiwan to Receive $345 Million in Military Aid from US

United States: White house has announced to provide military aid of total $345 Million to Taiwan, announced in a statement by President Of The United States (POTUS). The announcement included provisions for defense equipment, education and training of Taiwanese.

POTUS stated, “By the authority vested in me as President by the Constitution and the laws of the United States of America, including section 621 of the Foreign Assistance Act of 1961 (FAA), I hereby delegate to the Secretary of State the authority under section 506(a)(3) of the FAA to direct the drawdown of up to $345 million in defense articles and services of the Department of Defense, and military education and training, to provide assistance to Taiwan.”

US provides aid to Taiwan

The United States does not officially recognize Taiwan as an independent nation, but under its “one china policy” it supports Taiwan defense. Taiwan, a self-governing island, claimed by Beijing as part of China, has been constantly seeking to bolster its military capabilities in response to China’s growing assertiveness, including regular incursions of warplanes and naval vessels in the region.

Over the past years, the US has approved substantial military aid for Taiwan including supply of F-16 Fighter Jets. The latest aid package comes after the US congress granted POTUS the authority to draw aid for Taiwan from American military stockspiles.

As the tension continues to grow in the South China Sea region, the announcement of the new military aid indicates the deepening involvement of the United States and reflects the complex geopolitical dynamics in the Indo-pacific region.

Reaction of China

China’s recent military exercises around Taiwan, involving numerous warships and planes close to Taiwanese mainland, have further fueled the tensions. President Biden support for Taiwan and its independent-leaning government by President Tsai Ing-wen has hyped the tensions in the region. The development will have eliciting response by China, which has repeatedly expressed its commitment to reunify Taiwan with the Chinese mainland.
