US Iran War: The United States Pentagon has announced in a statement that US Navy Secretary John Phelan would be leaving the administration with immediate effect. Phelan would be replaced by Hung Cao.

US Iran War-What Caused The Wartime Shakeup?

It has been reported that US Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth fired him as he was upset with the failure of Phelan to swiftly implement reforms to speed shipbuilding and his fallouts with key Pentagon leadership. A source claimed that bad relationship arose between Hegseth, Steve Feinberg (Hegseth’s deputy) and Hung Cao (the new acting Navy secretary). An ethics investigation into the office of John Phelan is also to be blamed, as per sources.

According to media reports, Hegseth fired the Navy Secretary. This is the second big wartime shakeup after Hegseth sacked Army Chief of Staff General Randy George who was appointed as the 41st Chief of Staff of the Army on September 21, 2023. George was replaced by Gen. Christopher LaNeve, the current vice chief of staff of the Army.

Last year, the chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff and Air Force General CQ Brown along with the chief of naval operations and Air Force vice chief of staff were fired. Gen. Jim Silfe, the Air Force vice-chief of staff, Navy’s top uniformed officer, Adm. Lisa Franchetti and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff, Gen. Charles “C.Q.” Brown were fired.

Gen. David Hodne, who led the Army’s Transformation and Training Command and Maj. Gen. William Green, the head of the Army’s Chaplain Corps were also dismissed from their roles previously.

Phelan Dismissal Blasted

Senator Jack Reed, who is presently the top Democrat on the Senate Armed Services Committee, commented that the dismissal of Phelan is troubling. Reed remarked that the dismissal of Phelan is yet another instance of the dysfunction and instability that have been defining the Department of Defence under President Trump and Secretary Hegseth.
