Punjab News: Safety Concerns Lead to Suspension of Kartarpur Corridor Pilgrimage Amid Floods

Punjab News: Due to the rising water level in the Ravi, authorities in Punjab‘s Gurdaspur on Thursday prohibited pilgrims from using the Kartarpur corridor to trek to the venerable Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan. Himanshu Aggarwal, the deputy commissioner for Gurdaspur, stated that they had suggested to the authorities to postpone the pilgrimage for two days. He said that the choice had been made with the pilgrims’ security in mind. The Dera Baba Nanak shrine in the Gurdaspur area is connected to Gurdwara Darbar Sahib in Pakistan by the Kartarpur corridor.

Water Release from Ujh River in Jammu Causes Ravi River’s Water Level to Rise

After 2.6 lakh cusecs of water were released into the Ujh river in Jammu on Wednesday, the water level in the Ravi river increased. Despite the river’s growing water level, Aggarwal asserted that the Kartarpur corridor is not under danger. “We have recommended the suspension of pilgrimage for the next two days,” he told PTI over the phone.

Authorities Monitor Water Inflow from Pakistani Side Near Kartarpur Corridor

On Thursday morning, according to the officer, water from the Pakistani side also entered close to the Kartarpur corridor and the earthen embankment. He claimed that they were gathering data on how the water entered from the Pakistani side. According to Aggarwal, the corridor is not in danger as a result of the waterlogging. The district government, he claimed, was closely watching the situation. Once the river’s water level dropped, he claimed, the pilgrimage will be resumed.
