Punjab Government Stands Firm on SYL Canal Issue Amidst Centre’s Mediation

In a recent meeting convened by Union Minister for Jal Shakti, Gajendra Shekhawat, aimed at resolving the longstanding Satluj Yamuna Link (SYL) canal issue between Punjab and Haryana, the Punjab government reiterated its firm stance. Punjab asserts that it has no surplus water for sharing with Haryana, and it lacks the land required for constructing the canal after returning the acquired land to the original owners in 2016.

This meeting, directed by the Supreme Court, marks the third attempt by the Centre to mediate between the Chief Ministers of Punjab and Haryana. Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann is expected to propose alternative solutions during the meeting, including a review of the Yamuna Water Sharing Agreement of 1994 to include Punjab as a beneficiary.

Background and Ongoing Dispute

The SYL canal dispute has been a longstanding issue between Punjab and Haryana, with the former maintaining that it cannot spare water due to scarcity and lacks the land for canal construction. The Supreme Court’s intervention and the Centre’s mediation attempts underscore the complexity of the matter. Punjab’s Chief Minister is set to present alternative solutions during the meeting, reflecting the state’s commitment to finding equitable resolutions amidst water scarcity concerns.
