Veteran actor Satish Shah passed away on October 25 at the age of 74. The Hum Saath Saath Hain and Sarabhai vs Sarabhai star died at around 2:30 pm at Mumbai’s Hinduja Hospital. He had been suffering from kidney-related issues and had recently undergone a transplant. His manager confirmed that the funeral will take place on Sunday.

Filmmaker Ashoke Pandit shared the sad news on social media. He wrote, “Sad and shocked to inform you that our dear friend and a great actor Satish Shah has expired few hours ago due to kidney failure. He was rushed to Hinduja Hospital where he breathed his last. A great loss to our industry.”

His Film And TV Career
Satish Shah was born in Mumbai to a Kutchi Gujarati family. He studied at the Film and Television Institute of India (FTII), where he trained to become an actor. His career began in the 1970s, and his talent for comedy quickly made him a fan favourite. His breakthrough came with Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro in 1983, where he played the unforgettable role of Commissioner D’Mello. The film became a cult classic and turned him into a household name.
In a career spanning over five decades, Shah appeared in several hit films. Some of his most popular roles were in Dilwale Dulhania Le Jayenge (1995), Hero No. 1 (1997), Hum Saath Saath Hain (1999), Kal Ho Naa Ho (2003), Main Hoon Na (2004), and Om Shanti Om (2007). His comic timing and warmth made him one of Bollywood’s most loved supporting actors.
Shah was not only a film star but also a television legend. He became a household name in the 1980s with Yeh Jo Hai Zindagi, where he played 55 different characters in 55 episodes. He later starred in popular shows like Filmi Chakkar, Ghar Jamai and All The Best.
His most iconic TV role came in Sarabhai vs Sarabhai (2004). He played Indravadan Sarabhai, the witty and sarcastic father who became a fan favourite. His chemistry with Ratna Pathak Shah, who played Maya Sarabhai, was loved by viewers. The show’s 2017 web revival brought him back to screens and reminded fans of his unmatched humour.
Apart from acting, Shah also contributed to the industry in other ways. He served as a judge on Comedy Circus and was a member of the FTII society in 2015. Known for his humility, he often said he preferred meaningful work over quantity. He reportedly turned down several projects that didn’t match his standards.
Satish Shah Was Survived By Wife Madhu Shah, Had No Children
In his personal life, Shah was married to designer Madhu Shah. The couple tied the knot in 1982 and shared a strong bond. They had no children but remained devoted to each other throughout their marriage.
In 2020, Shah tested positive for COVID-19 but recovered fully after a brief hospital stay. He had thanked his doctors and fans for their support during that time.
Satish Shah’s death has left a huge void in Indian cinema and television. His performances, humour, and charm will always be remembered by generations of fans.
