Delhi News: ‘15% of Delhi’s Groundwater is Contaminated With…’ Are We Drinking Safe Water? Expert Reveals Big, Check Solution

Delhi News: If poor AQI in Delhi was not enough to terrify you, a recent report that 13-15 percent of the city's groundwater is not fit for consumption will surely do.

Delhi News: Dr. Manav Vora, a reputed orthopaedic surgeon and health educator, has shared a video on Instagram revealing that Delhi’s groundwater is not safe from uranium and other harmful toxins.

Watch the video here:

Dr. Vora said almost 1 in 7 tubewells in Delhi contain uranium. Dr. Vora added that Delhi is not the only casualty. States like Punjab, Haryana, Uttar Pradesh and Karnataka are also the victims. A recent CGWB survey revealed that Punjab had the highest contamination with approximately half of the state’s groundwater samples demonstrating excessive uranium.

Dr. Manav Vora recommended that RO filters with reverse osmosis and activated carbon could be an excellent choice. Moreover, everyone should get their local water tested, especially if they are relying on borewell or tubewell water.

Delhi News-Report From The Central Ground Water Board (CGWB)

A report from the Central Ground Water Board (CGWB) had revealed rising uranium levels in Delhi’s groundwater.

The report revealed that as much as 13-15 percent of groundwater samples collected before and after the monsoon in Delhi were found to include elevated uranium levels. This is of grave concern to every resident of Delhi as approximately 5,500 tube wells supply around 450 million litres of groundwater daily to homes in the capital.

The same report also highlighted that other harmful substances, including nitrate and fluoride, were found in many samples.

What Risks Do Uranium In Water Pose?

A naturally-occurring radioactive element, Uranium can pose severe health risks when found in water even in small quantities. This can cause significant damage to kidneys causing changes in urine composition and kidney inflammation. It can also cause significant weight loss, piloerection or hemorrhages in the eyes, legs and nose.
