Toronto Student Killing: An Indian-origin student studying at Canada’s University of Toronto was fatally shot by unknown attackers.

Shivank Avasthi, a 20-year-old doctoral student, was found with a gunshot. Police is seeking the help of public to arrest the accused. In an official statement, police said police responded to a call on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, at approximately 3:34 pm, for an unknown trouble in the Highland Creek Trail and Old Kingston Road Area.
It added the police found a male victim with a gunshot wound. Avasthi was then pronounced deceased on scene. Police reported this is the 41st homicide of 2025.
Other students posted that the lack of information about the suspect is making them worried while making a return to the campus.
A member of the cheerleading team of the University of Toronto Scarborough, Shivank possibly became the victim of a hate crime.

India expressed “deep anguish” over the “tragic” death of Shivank Avasthi. The Consulate General of India in Toronto said on X that it was providing necessary assistance to his family.
A few days back, a 30-year-old Indian woman, Himanshi Khurana, was murdered in Toronto. Her body was recovered in a residence a day after a missing report in the Strachan Avenue and Wellington Street W. area was filed. A warrant was issued against 32-year-old Abdul Ghafoori, the suspect in the case, for first-degree murder.
