Mahindra Scorpio N pickup: Mahindra has hinted the concept for a pickup truck that would be unveiled at its annual event on August 15. The event this year will take place in South Africa and will provide more information about the company's future mobility initiatives.

Widder wheels bigger cargo bed

The new truck, code-named Z121, will be built on the Scorpio N platform but will have a wider wheelbase to allow for a bigger cargo bed. For comparison, the pickup version of the Scorpio Classic, known as the Getaway in India and the Pik Up in South Africa and Australia, has a wheelbase that is extended to slightly over 3 metres.

Will arrive in the market in 2025

Expect single- and double-cab body variants as well as a standard as well as a tray-back bed on the production version, which won't be available until the beginning of 2025. A powertrain lineup adapted from the SUV is also possible, meaning that 2WD and 4WD, manual and automatic, and gasoline and diesel engines may all be available. The Scorpio N-based pickup will go by the name "Pik Up," although it's unclear at this time if it will replace the present model or be sold alongside it.

Mahindra Scorpio N pickup: Company wants to grow globally

Mahindra is not a stranger to the global auto markets, but with the release of its new generation cars, the domestic manufacturer is approaching the international markets with renewed emphasis and drive. With the Z121's impending global premiere, Mahindra may assert that this pickup is essentially going to be suited to South Africa, a country that adores pickups, or bakkies as they are known there, and a market that is becoming increasingly important to the business.

More than half vehicles from India

A significant South African automobile platform, cars.co.za, based its analysis on NAAMSA statistics, and found that over half of South Africa's imports in 2022 originated from India, with China coming in second with an 11 percent share. Given that around 65 percent of compact vehicles sold in South Africa last year were imports rather than locally produced vehicles, the number is significant. Thus, the area would be a significant global market for Mahindra.
