The National Company Law Tribunal (NCLT) has announced the bankruptcy of the ex-promoter of Videocon Industries, Venugopal Nandlal Dhoot, for the overdue amount of about ˳12,668 crore. Owed to the State Bank of India (SBI). The insolvency order comes after years of financial crises faced by the Videocon Group. The order was issued by the Mumbai bench of NCLT on November 5, 2026, upon admission of SBI’s bankruptcy petition filed against Dhoot in his personal capacity as a guarantor of the loans taken by Videocon Industries and Videocon Telecommunications.

Why has Venugopal Dhoot been declared bankrupt?

This matter relates to loans obtained by Videocon Industries Ltd. and its associate companies from SBI and its former associate banks. Dhoot had given personal guarantees for these credit facilities. In February 2018, after the companies defaulted on repaying loans, SBI drew on the guarantees provided by Dhoot personally. As per the petition by SBI, the principal outstanding dues, with interest and penalties, were ₹12,668.06 crore on September 30, 2026. Earlier, Dhoot proposed a repayment of ₹600 crore in 36 months through a real estate development project in Siliguri, which had been rejected due to its reliance on next-stage approval, development, and cash flows, without any upfront payments involved and was a mere 0.42% of admitted dues.

What happens to Venugopal Dhoot’s personal assets?

Due to the NCLT order, Dhoot will lose power over his bankruptcy estate. The tribunal has roped in Ashish Narayan as the bankruptcy trustee. The trustee shall be in charge of running the estate, calling for the claims of creditors, and distribution of assets as may be available as per the provisions of IBC. Dhoot is being asked to provide a statement of his financial position to the trustee within seven days of the date of his bankruptcy.

What Does Bankruptcy Mean For Other Videocon Promoters?

Dhoot’s insolvency does not necessarily mean that the remaining group promoters or directors of Videocon will be bankrupt. If Videocon’s lenders file a case against any of Videocon’s promoters for personal guarantees, a separate legal process will come into play. Their liabilities will vary.

Will Videocon Employees Lose Their Jobs?

The personal bankruptcy of Dhoot does not come in the way of jobs and salaries of individuals working for Videocon. The group’s financial situation and the impending insolvency proceedings at the company level, however, could impact the functioning of the organization. Employees with unpaid salaries will have to raise their claims.

Relief or Disgrace? What does the NCLT order signal?

NCLT’s verdict provides SBI with a legal pathway to recoup the overdue amount by attaching Dhoot’s personal assets. As for Dhoot, it means losing control of his bankruptcy estate and being subject to restrictions imposed under the insolvency law. The next relevant question is how much will the creditors get back and what do they signify for other Videocon investors.
