AAP gets majority and ends BJP’s 15 year old rule

MCD Elections: AAP has emerged victorious in MCD elections and has ended BJP’s 15 year old rein. However, BJP has put up a spirited fight and had to contend with anti-incumbency due to its long uninterrupted three term stay in the office.

AAP ends BJP’s 15 Year control over MCD

The Arvind Kejriwal led party has won 132 seats, well past the halfway mark in the 250 member civic body , as against the BJP’s 104. The Congress could only win from 9 wards.

Elections to the MCD were held on December 4 and a total of 1,349 candidates contested the elections. In MCD elections held in 2017, BJP had won 181 municipal wards, AAP could secure only 48 and the Congress finished third with 30 wards.

Delhi Chief Minister thanks people for mandate, says need PM Modi’s blessings to improve Delhi conditions

After his party stormed to power in MCD, Delhi Chief Minister and AAP Convener  Arvind Kejriwal in his address to AAP supporters at party headquarters  he said that he wants to take everybody along and stated that “I want the cooperation of the BJP and Congress to work for Delhi now. I appeal to the Centre and ask for the PM’s blessing to make Delhi better. We have to make MCD corruption free. Today the people of Delhi have given a message to the entire nation”.

He further stated “Will try to live up to expectations of people, urge parties to come together

On the eve of MCD win by AAP Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia has stated “ It’s not a victory , but a responsibility – to make Delhi clean , to make Delhi shine”.

The BJP has called for a meeting of key office bearers at party Headquarters to introspect results. The Congress which won nine seats in the MCD  elections and seven are Muslims.

Highlights of MCD Elections

  • The highest number of votes was polled by AAP’s Gagan Choudhary from Jharoda – 24,626
  • The highest victory margin (17,134) was recorded by AAP’s Aaley Mohammed Iqbal from Chandni Mahal. Iqbal garnered 19,199 votes, while his nearest competitor , Mohammed Hamid of Congress, polled only 2,065 votes.
  • The lowest victory margin was also recorded by AAP. Ashu Thakur the AAP candidate from Chitranjan Park defeated her nearest rival BJP’s Kanchan Bhadana Choudhary by only 44 votes. Thakur received 10,443 votes and Choudhary 10,339
  • AAP’s Bobi became the first transgender councilor in MCD, winning from Sultanpuri-A by 6,714 votes. She received 14,821 votes, while her nearest rival , Varuna Dhaka of Congress , polled 8,107 votes.

NOTA had a vote share of 0.78% , which was greater than the vote shares of NCP (0.2%), CPI-M (0.02%), AIMIM (0.62%), JD-U (0.16%), RLD (0.09%), Forward Block (0.02%), Samajwadi Party (0.01%), LJSP (0%) and IUML (0%)
