Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) MP Raghav Chadha has raised concerns over the massive surge in airfares during the Maha Kumbh 2025 in Prayagraj. Raghav Chadha, in a video message, criticised airlines for exploiting the sacred festival and urged the government to step in to make air travel more affordable for devotees.
He highlighted the spiritual importance of the Maha Kumbh, saying, “Millions of followers of Sanatan Dharma dream of attending this grand event to take a holy dip and seek blessings. However, airlines have turned this spiritual journey into a profit-making opportunity.”
Pilgrims Struggle as Flights to Prayagraj See Unprecedented Price Hike
Raghav Chadha pointed out that ticket prices for flights to Prayagraj, usually costing ₹5,000 to ₹8,000, have now surged to an alarming ₹50,000 to ₹60,000. This sharp increase has made it difficult for many pilgrims to attend the festival.

He urged the government to impose price caps or take other measures to ensure fair pricing for flights during such spiritual events. “Airlines must not exploit pilgrims during Maha Kumbh. We need immediate government action to address this issue,” he stated.
Affordable Travel to Prayagraj - Raghav Chadha Proposes Solutions
Drawing from a previous success where overpriced airport food was regulated, Raghav Chadha expressed confidence in a positive outcome this time too. He suggested that additional flights and reasonable price caps could help make the festival accessible to all.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) has already held discussions with airlines, requesting them to add flights and lower ticket prices on key holy dates like Mauni Amavasya, Basant Panchami, Magh Purnima, and Maha Shivratri.
Pilgrims Seek Alternatives Amid Rising Airfares
Faced with exorbitant ticket prices, many devotees are opting for alternative travel routes. Varanasi, located close to Prayagraj, has emerged as a more affordable option, with flights costing nearly 50% less.
Despite the challenges, thousands of pilgrims are flocking to the Triveni Sangam, braving the cold weather to participate in this grand spiritual event. The Maha Kumbh, which began on January 13, will continue until February 26, with millions expected to gather for key dates like Mauni Amavasya and Maha Shivratri.
