Toyota: Toyota Motor Corp. announced on Tuesday that, thanks to a reduction in the scarcity of chips, its group sold more cars in 2023 than any other carmaker, securing its dominance for a fourth straight year.
Toyota remains World’s Top Selling Carmaker
Including cars made by the group’s truck and minivan manufacturers, Daihatsu Motor Co. and Hino Motors Ltd., the automaker sold a record 11.23 million vehicles worldwide last year, up 7.2 percent from the previous year.
The previous record for the Japanese automaker was 10.74 million automobiles in 2019. Due in part to strong demand from North America, Europe, and Japan, the group’s global production rose 8.6% to a record 11.52 million vehicles.
Toyota alone sold 10.31 million cars globally, up 7.7 percent, while its global output increased 11.1 percent to 10.03 million automobiles, both annual statistics surpassing the 10 million mark for the first time. The strong sales of hybrid cars, which increased 31.4 percent to 3.42 million units, contributed to the record numbers. Sales of electric vehicles increased significantly as well, rising 4.3 times to 104,018 units.
Toyota’s Electric Plan
With an aim to sell 1.5 million EVs annually by 2026 and 3.5 million by 2030, Toyota CEO Koji Sato has declared that the company plans to have an electrified version of every Toyota and Lexus model available worldwide by 2025.
