From depression to cancer, five medical conditions that lead to unintended weight loss

Five medical conditions that causes weight loss

Depression

People can lose weight due to depression. According to research, many people who are victims of depression have lost massive weight. Because of Depression the level of hormones in the body deteriorates, due to which a change in your body weight can also be seen.

Symptoms of depression

Sleep deprivation or excessive sleepiness

Undereating or overeating

Unexpected weight gain or loss

Cancer

Although the symptoms of cancer differ according to the type, location and stage of the disease, sometimes unexplained weight loss also indicates cancer. Cancer is a very deadly disease in which the cells of the body start multiplying twice as fast and damage our healthy tissue.

The problem of weight loss is mostly found in lung cancer or those cancers which affect the digestive tract like pancreatic cancer, colorectal cancer, liver cancer, stomach cancer and others.

Rheumatoid arthritis

Rheumatoid arthritis is an autoimmune disorder that causes inflammation of the joints. Weight loss can also occur due to Rheumatoid arthritis because the inflammation caused by this disease forces the body to use excessive energy.

Muscle atrophy

Muscle atrophy, also termed as muscle loss, occurs when muscle shrinks or breaks down. Due to this disease, there is excessive weight loss. There are many reasons for muscle atrophy such as inactivity due to an injury, malnutrition, multiple sclerosis, amyotrophic lateral sclerosis, a stroke and aging.

Addison’s disease

Addison’s disease is caused by a rare autoimmune disorder that damages the adrenal glands found in our body and prevents it from producing adequate amounts of cortisol and aldosterone.

According to the National Institutes of Health (NIH), those who suffer from Addison’s disease notice a decrease in their food intake and there is also excessive weight loss.
