Government on Omicron : 101 Omicron cases in India, no evidence that our vaccines won’t work

The number of people infected with the new variant of the corona virus in the country, Omicron, has crossed 100. Lav Agarwal, Joint Secretary, Union Health Ministry said that 101 Omicron infected have been confirmed in 11 states. He said that the daily cases of Covid infection for the last 20 days are less than 10,000, but in view of the increasing cases in Omicron, there is a need to be cautious. Most of the Omicron cases that have come in the country have travel history or have come in contact with people with travel history.

The official, citing the WHO, said that Omicron is spreading faster than the delta form of the corona virus in South Africa, where the delta spread was less. It is feared that where community transmission occurs, Omicron infection will overtake the delta pattern.

Lav Aggarwal said, “Omicron is spreading rapidly, we need to avoid non-essential travel, mass gatherings and New Year celebrations on a large scale”.

At the same time, he said about the effect of the corona vaccine on Omicron, that there is no evidence that our vaccine does not work on the new variants.

Lav Agarwal said, “Right now there is no evidence that our vaccines will not work. People who contracted the infection even after being vaccinated have reported mild symptoms. He emphasised the need to get vaccinated.”

While in response to a question about the community spread of Omicron, Agarwal said, “Most cases of Omicron are reported by people with an international travel history. Contact tracing of such cases is also being done.”
