Public health officials said Wednesday that an Alaskan health worker had severe allergy complaints after receiving Pfizer Inc. and BioNotech’s coronovirus vaccine.
A similar person had an adverse reaction to two cases reported last week in the UK just minutes after taking the Pfizer shot on Tuesday.
The UK medical regulator has stated that anyone with a history of anaphylaxis, or severe allergic reactions to medication or food, should not receive the Pfizer-Biotech COVID-19 vaccine.
But the US Food and Drug Administration has said that most Americans with allergies must be safe to receive the vaccine.
It said that people who have had severe allergic reactions to the first vaccine or the ingredients in this particular vaccine should avoid taking the shot. The Alaska patient had no history of an allergic reaction, emergency department director Lindy Jones in the capital, Juneau, where the patient was treated, told reporters at a virtual briefing.
A challenge in transferring and storing Pfizer’s shot, which it developed with German pharmaceutical manufacturer BioNtech SE, has been that it should be kept in ultracold temperatures in specialized freezers and containers. Four delivery trays of this week’s shot were pulled back from delivery in California and Alabama and sent back to the company, as they were commanders, who serve as chief operating officers of General Warne Speed Operations .
