Non-locals in J&K get voting rights, check how opposition reacts

People of other states can also become voters of Jammu and Kashmir. If a person from another state is doing job, business, wages or studies in Jammu and Kashmir, then he can become a voter of Jammu and Kashmir. This information has been given by the Chief Election Commissioner of the state, after which the restlessness of the state’s parties like PDP and National Conference has increased and leaders like Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti are furious.

In fact, according to the report of the Delimitation Commission, 20 to 25 lakh new voters can be added in Jammu and Kashmir. At present, the number of voters in the state is 76 lakh, which will increase to more than 1 crore. Till now everything is fine. But a controversy has started regarding who will be the new voters of Jammu and Kashmir.

According to the Chief Electoral Officer, it is not necessary to be a domicile that is permanent resident to vote in Jammu and Kashmir after the abolition of Article 370. This means to say that if a resident of Uttar Pradesh is living in Jammu and Kashmir, then he can become a voter there. Not only this, the soldiers of the army or security forces who are posted in the peace station can also become voters. Jammu is a peace station, so those soldiers from outside states who are posted here can become voters of Jammu if they want.

After the announcement of giving voting rights to people from outside states in Jammu and Kashmir, Omar Abdullah and Mehbooba Mufti alleged that this would directly benefit the BJP. The new voter list in Jammu and Kashmir will be completed by November 25. The number of assembly constituencies has also increased from 83 to 90. 600 polling stations have also been added and now the total number of polling stations in J&K has gone up to 11,370. But the decision to give the right to vote to non-local people has heated up the politics of the state.

NC leader Omar Abdullah said, “Is BJP so insecure about the support of genuine voters of J&K that it needs to import provisional voters to win seats? When the people of J&K are given a chance to exercise their franchise, none of these things will help the BJP.”

BJP attacker Mehbooba Mufti said the Indian government’s decision to postpone elections in Jammu and Kashmir, first tilting the balance in favor of the BJP and now allowing non-locals to vote, is to influence the election results. The real objective is to continue to rule Jammu and Kashmir with muscle power to power down the local people.
