PM Modi, Sheikh Hasina to inaugurate Bangladesh Maitree Power Project

Prime Minister of India Narendra Modi and Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina may jointly inaugurate 1320 MW Maitri Super Thermal Power Station.

Earlier, PM Sheikh Hasina is likely to visit India in early September for a bilateral visit at the invitation of her Indian counterpart Narendra Modi.

The coal-fired plant Bangladesh India Friendship Power Company Limited is a 50-50 joint venture between India’s NTPC and Bangladesh Power Development Board.

It is known as the largest power plant of Bangladesh. The project is worth $1.5 billion.

Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina is expected to visit India any day between September 5 and 7. During this they can stay in India for 2 to 3 days. The visit is being accorded utmost importance by the Modi government as Dhaka is one of India’s closest allies.

The trial will run between Kolkata-Chatgram-Mongla ports for India before PM Hasina’s arrival in Delhi will mark a new chapter in India-Bangladesh trade bilateral ties.

The first vessel from Kolkata is expected to reach Mongla on the Pashur river on August 5. The Modi government has allowed the much needed wheat export to Bangladesh through the Hili land port in Dinajpur. Bangladesh has also benefited from this.

The price of wheat in Bangladesh has come under control. India supplies about 66 per cent of wheat to Bangladesh. In addition, Bangladesh exports about 15 per cent of its wheat from Ukraine.

Wheat crisis started looming over Bangladesh due to Russia-Ukraine crisis, but on such an condition, India has helped in alleviating the worries of the neighboring country.

Even though Bangladesh has approached the IMF for a loan, the neighboring country economy is growing at more than 6 per cent. Like other countries of the Indian subcontinent, the currency of Bangladesh has also been influenced by the dollar.

The Bangladeshi taka, however, has been less affected than the Pakistani rupee and the Sri Lankan rupee.
