Assam CM: For the purpose of the delineation exercise, four newly established districts in Assam will be merged with existing ones

The administrative merging of four newly created districts with existing districts was recently approved by the Assam cabinet. Tamulpur district will be merged with Baksa, Hojai district with Nagaon, Biswanath district with Sonitpur, and Bajali district with Barpeta district.

Assam district merges four newly formed districts with existing districts

The administration stated that all district offices established during this time will continue to operate, as will the police and judicial functions, to ensure that neither officials nor staff encounter any difficulties. Chief Minister Hemant Biswa Sharma stated that “These decisions have been taken because of administrative ascendancy and in the interest of Assam, and the society. We have decided to re-merge four districts. Decisions were taken in the interest of Assam’s future,”

Decision taken in accordance with Election Commission’s order on delimitation, mandating the Assam Government makes no changes in any district or administrative units form January 1, 2023

Further stated that “this was done in accordance with the Election Commission’s delimitation decision, which stipulates that starting on January 1, 2023, the Assam government may not change any districts or administrative units.
According to Chief Minister Sarma, this is only a short-term solution for the delimitation procedure. The process of establishing the limits or borders of the geographical constituencies in a nation or a state with a legislative body is known as delimitation.

After merger total number of districts will come down from 25 to 31

The overall number of districts will decrease from 35 to 31 following the merger. On December 27, the Election Commission announced that, at the Union Law Ministry’s request, it had started the delineation of Assam’s assembly and parliamentary constituencies and will revise the number of seats using data from the 2001 census.

The BJP has been under fire from opposition parties for allegedly seeking to rig Assam’s Muslim-majority seats in their favour. Others have questioned why the 2001 Census data was used rather than the more recent 2011 Census, which shows that Assam has experienced the highest growth in the nation for Muslims with a 3.3% increase.

These accusations have been dismissed by the BJP as false and intended to cause confusion.
