Madhya Pradesh Assembly Elections 2023: Here are ten issues that, as Madhya Pradesh prepares to elect a new government, are likely to dominate the political landscape and have a major impact on the outcome of the vote for the 230-member legislature.
The BJP and Congress, The Main Rivals in Madhya Pradesh Politics
Although organisations like the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) will strive to make their presence felt in pockets of their influence and give the two giants of Indian politics some serious competition, the incumbent BJP and the opposition Congress will continue to be the main rivals for power. After the final elections in 2018, the state had a change of guard in March 2020 when the Congress government, led by seasoned politician Kamal Nath, fell and the BJP, after only 15 months in opposition, swept back into power.
BJP's Battle Against Anti-Incumbency and Congress' Bid to Capitalize on Discontent
The BJP must overcome anti-incumbency that dates back nearly four terms, with the exception of a 15-month period from December 2018 to March 2020 when the Congress was in office. The Congress, on the other hand, would try to capitalise on what it perceives as public discontent of the Shivraj Singh Chouhan administration on a variety of topics.
BJP's Trump Card in Madhya Pradesh Elections
The BJP's secret weapon will continue to be Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who will dominate the campaign scene. For yet another electoral triumph, the saffron party will mainly rely on Modi's persuasive oratory, political charisma, and persistent mass appeal.
Exposing Alleged Corruption in BJP's 18-Year Rule
The main election platform of the Congress will centre on allegations of corruption under BJP rule. When the BJP was in power in Karnataka, according to the opposition party, there was a "40%" commission government, but in Madhya Pradesh, there is a "50%" cut. A few months ago, the Shivraj Chouhan administration was accused of receiving "50%" commission, according to posters stuck up by the Congress throughout the state. The Mahakal Lok in Ujjain was allegedly built with significant flaws, according to the Congress. Over 250 "major scams" have also been documented by the Congress over the course of the BJP's 18-year rule. The Vyapam recruitment and admissions scam is at the top of the list of financial scandals.
Anti-Incumbency Challenges and Leadership Dynamics
Despite facing anti-incumbency, the BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh since 2003, with the exception of a 15-month interval (December 2018–March 2020), during which the Congress held control. Shivraj Singh Chouhan, the chief minister of Madhya Pradesh, has been the party's public face for the entire time. In a shift in tactics, the BJP has put out three Union ministers and four lawmakers in the state, a move that is perceived as an effort to quell anti-incumbency sentiment against Chouhan, a four-term chief minister. The number of top BJP politicians present has made the competition for the position of chief minister quite open.
Scindia's Balancing Act
Jyotiraditya Scindia, the Union's minister of civil aviation, will have a difficult time getting election ballots for all of his major backers who switched from the Congress to the BJP in 2020. The devoted BJP leaders and workers will be sacrificed in order to accommodate everyone, and this will undoubtedly lead to discontent.
Crime on the Rise
Voters are very concerned about the rising crime rate, especially crimes against women and people from disadvantaged groups like Dalits and tribals. The state was startled by the event in Sidhi district where someone peed on a tribal man. Chief Minister Chouhan apologised to the tribal man and bathed his feet as a damage control measure.
Deaths Raise Concerns in Kuno National Park
The project to restore the nation's fastest land mammal has come under fire after the deaths of six cheetahs and three of their cubs in the Kuno National Park in MP. The reintroduction programme is currently a topic of conversation. A portion of environmentalists have questioned the project's conception and execution as a whole.
Farmers' Plight Dominates Madhya Pradesh Politics as Parties Vie for Their Support
Politics in the state has long been dominated by problems relating to agriculture, and all parties have made an effort to win over farmers. When in power, both the Congress and the BJP have been accused of defrauding farmers on farm debt waivers. For farmers, the lack of high-quality seeds and the scarcity of fertilisers have been serious issues.
Youth Unemployment
Youth unemployment remains a problem and one of the top concerns for voters. If elected, the AAP has pledged to provide unemployment benefits in an effort to win over young people without jobs. On the other hand, the BJP government has been working to help young people financially and enhance their talents.
Education and Healthcare Shortages Dominate Madhya Pradesh Election Agenda
Both have a strong connection to common people and their general welfare. In remote areas, many schools have been established, yet there are not enough competent teachers to staff them. Even if teachers are available, there is not enough infrastructure in place to give pupils a quality education. These polls place a lot of emphasis on the regularisation of temporary instructors. Most small-town hospitals and primary health care facilities are understaffed, particularly in the area of doctors. This has a negative impact on rural health services.
Kamal Nath Takes Center Stage as Congress' CM Face
Although Chief Minister Chouhan continues to be the most well-liked state leader, the BJP is ambiguous on the issue, in contrast to the Congress, which has made it clear that its veteran leader Kamal Nath is the CM face of the party.
