Nitish Kumar resigns as Bihar Chief Minister

Janata Dal (United) chairperson Nitish Kumar on Tuesday submitted his resignation to the Bihar Governor, Phagu Chauhan, after snapping ties with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), bringing an end to the coalition government in the state.

Speaking to reporters outside Raj Bhavan, Kumar said that the decision to resign was taken at a meeting of the MPs and MLAs of the Janata Dal-United (JDU). All of them decided that we should leave the NDA, Kumar said.

According to the reports, Nitish Kumar arrived at the residence of Rabri Devi in Patna where Congress and Left party leaders and MLAs had met earlier today for a meeting. As Nitish Kumar ended his alliance with the BJP, speculation is rife that he would seek another appointment from the Bihar governor. But not alone.

Before any official announcement, RJD leader Upendra Kushwaha in a tweet congratulated Nitish Kumar for leading a “new coalition in a new form,” embracing the RJD-led ‘Mahagathbandhan’ (grand alliance) to continue in office. “Congratulations to Nitish Kumar ji for assuming leadership of a new coalition, in a new form”, tweeted Kushwaha referring to the opposition grand alliance’s support for the JD(U) leader. “March ahead Nitish ji. The country is waiting for you”, Kushwaha added.

First reaction of BJP over Nitish Kumar’s registration

The BJP, in its first official reaction after Nitish Kumar met Governor Phagu Chauhan and tendered his resignation as chief minister of the NDA government said whatever happened was a betrayal of Bihar’s people and the saffron party.

“We fought the 2020 polls together under the NDA, the mandate was for JD(U) and the BJP, we won more seats despite that Nitish Kumar was made the CM. Whatever happened today is a betrayal of Bihar’s people and the BJP,” Bihar BJP chief Sanjay Jaiswal said at a press conference.

Meanwhile, Hindustani Awam Morcha (HAM) chief Jitan Ram Manjhi has extended support to JD(U) chief Nitish Kumar, who snapped ties with the BJP and resigned as Bihar Chief Minister.

Nitish’s JD(U) performed poorly in the 2020 Bihar assembly elections and secured only 43 seats compared to BJP’s 74. Despite becoming the senior partner, BJP formed the government under the leadership of Nitish. However, differences between the two partners surfaced soon and the two have differed on several issues politically and ideologically over the years, such as caste census, Hindutva, secularism, and Agnipath scheme.

Rumours of a growing rift between the BJP-JDU ie the NDA alliance in Bihar intensified after Kumar skipped a key meeting of the NITI Aayog, headed by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, on Sunday and JD(U) leader RCP Singh tendered his resignation from the party.

Singh, once considered a close aide of Nitish Kumar had announced his exit from the party after being served a notice seeking an explanation on allegations of corruption.
