Pakistan PM Shehbaz Sharif says Even friendly countries think we are beggars

Presenting a weak picture of the country’s economy in trouble, Prime Minister Shahbaz Sharif said on Thursday that even the allies are now seeing Pakistan as a country which is constantly begging for money. Local newspaper Dawn News quoted Sharif as saying, “The Prime Minister, while addressing a conference of lawyers on Wednesday, said that today when we go to a friendly country or call them, they think that we have come to ask them for money.

Sharif said that even small economies have left Pakistan behind and we are wandering with a bowl for the last 75 years. According to Sharif, the country’s economy was already facing a ‘challenging situation’, now the floods have also put it in more trouble. The cash-starved country is also grappling with the worst floods in the last 30 years. Since the beginning of June this year, more than 1,400 people have died due to floods and 33 million people are affected by this disaster.

At the same time, one-third of the country was submerged in water. One out of every seven people here are badly affected by floods. About 78,000 square kilometers (21 million acres) of crops have been submerged by the floods and damage is estimated to be around $12 billion.

At the same time, a news report has also warned that half of Pakistan may face famine if food supply from outside sources is not arranged in the midst of floods across the country. According to Pakistani media reports, the report compiled by agencies of the Ministry of National Food Security and Research states that the floods have destroyed at least 70 percent of Pakistan’s food supply, which means that the population needs to be protected from famine.
