Political leaders reaction after announcement by PM Modi to repeal farm laws

Prime Minister Narendra Modi announced to repeal the three farm laws that had faced various protests for over a year during his address to the nation today on November 19.

Modi, in an address to the nation on the occasion of Guru Parab, said that the laws will be repealed by the end of the month in the Winter Session of Parliament.

Following the announcement, political leaders took to social media to express their views on the same.

P Chidambaram said, “What cannot be achieved by democratic protests can be achieved by the fear of impending elections! PM’s announcement on the withdrawal of the three farm laws is not inspired by a change of policy or a change of heart. It is impelled by fear of elections!”

“The country’s farmers have defeated arrogance with their satyagraha. Jai Hindi, Jai Hindi’s farmers,” Mr Gandhi tweeted, along with an old tweet from January this year where he said, “Mark my words, the government will have to take back the anti-farm laws.”

Captain Amarinder Singh tweeted, Great news! Thankful to PM Narendra Modi ji for acceding to the demands of every punjabi & repealing the 3 black laws on the pious occasion of Guru Nanak Jayanti. I am sure the central govt will continue to work in tandem for the development of Kisani! #NoFarmers_NoFood

Meanwhile, Bharatiya Kisan Union (BKU) leader Rakesh Tikait on Friday said the ongoing anti-farm laws protest will be withdrawn only after the contentious legislations are repealed in Parliament. He also stressed that the government should talk to farmers over the issue of minimum support price (MSP) of crops and other matters.
