Ukrainian missile attack caused deaths in south Russian city: Moscow

MOSCOW:3 people were killed and numerous buildings were shattered in the south Russian city of Belgorod near the Ukrainian border. The regional governor said it was a Ukrainian missile attack.

It has been reported that around 11 apartment buildings and 39 private houses were damaged, including 5 that were shattered into pieces, Governor Vyacheslav Gladkov posted on the Telegram messaging app.

“I emphasise that this missile attack had been intentionally planned and was launched at the civilian population of Russian cities,” Russian Defence Ministry spokesman Igor Konashenkov said. Meanwhile, Ukraine didn’t respond immediately.

Konashenkov said that the Russian air defences had destroyed a total of 3 Tochka-U missiles, but fragments from one of the rockets fell on the residential building. Further, he also said that they had destroyed explosive-laden Ukrainian drones that were approaching Kursk, another city in southern Russia.

Ever since Russia invaded Ukraine on February 24, Belgorod has witnessed various reports of attacks and other regions bordering Ukraine. Ukraine has not claimed any accountability for the recent happening but has interpreted the occurrence at weapon stores and sites as “Karma” for Russia’s invasion.

“The sound was so strong that I jumped up, I woke up, got very scared and started screaming,” a resident of the city said, describing blasts that took place around 3 a.m. local time. “All the windows in our house were shattered.”

Belgorod is a city in Russia with a net population of 400,000 people, around 40 km north of the border with Ukraine. The regional governor Vyacheslav Gladkov said that at least four people were injured and two were hospitalised including a 10-year-old boy in the recent incident.
