Vijay Baghel to Contest Against CM Bhupesh as BJP Announces 21 Candidates in First List

Chhattisgarh assembly Elections: The 90-member Chhattisgarh assembly elections are set for later this year, and the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) unveiled its initial list of 21 candidates on Thursday. Vijay Baghel, an MP from Durg, was put forth by the party to run against Bhupesh Baghel, the chief minister-elect of the Congress, in Patan. Five women are on the list, along with one member of a Schedules Caste and ten members of a Schedules Tribe, respectively.

21 Candidates Announced in Chhattisgarh

BJP has fielded Lok Sabha MP Vijay Baghel from Patan, Bhulan Singh Maravi from Premnagar, Laxmi Rajwade from Bhatgaon, Shakuntala Singh Porthe from Pratappur (ST), Praboj Bhinj from Lundra (ST), Sarla Kosaria from Saraipali (SC), Alka Chandrakar from Khallari, Rohit Sahu from Rajim, Gita Ghasi Sahu from Khujji and Maniram Kashyap from Bastar (ST), among others. Additionally, the BJP unveiled their initial list for the assembly elections in Madhya Pradesh. For 39 of the 230 seats that will go to the polls later this year, the party announced their candidates. The selection of the candidates took place in a meeting of the BJP’s Central Election Committee on Wednesday, which was also attended by key party officials like J P Nadda, Rajnath Singh, and Amit Shah, who are all Union ministers.

BJP’s Strategic Move Ahead of Election Commission’s Schedule Announcement

It is the first time the party has done so before the Election Commission of India has announced the dates for the elections. Rajasthan, Telangana, and Mizoram are also expected to have elections later this year in addition to Chhattisgarh and MP. Only in Madhya Pradesh is the BJP in power, and it is actively working to unseat the Chhattisgarh administration.
