Yogi Adityanath meets PM Modi, discusses new UP cabinet

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath met Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Delhi this evening, three days after he won a second consecutive victory for the party in the state elections, besting Samajwadi Party’s Akhilesh Yadav.

On the agenda, say sources, were the cabinet discussions for the new government in Uttar Pradesh. The swearing-in ceremony date was also discussed during the meeting, they added.

“Met Yogi Adityanath ji today. I congratulated him on the historic win in the UP elections. In the last 5 years, he has worked tirelessly to fulfill the aspirations of the people.I am sure that in the years to come, he will take the state to greater heights of development,” tweeted PM Modi after the meeting that lasted two hours.

Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prasad Maurya, the Party’s number two in Uttar Pradesh, lost the election in UP. Maurya lost in Sirathu by nearly 7,000 votes to Samajwadi Party ally Pallavi Patel of the Apna Dal (Kamerawadi). In addition to Keshav Maurya, ten other ministers in the current state cabinet were defeated in the election.

Dinesh Sharma, Yogi Adityanath’s second deputy, did not run in the election. The Party has not yet clear if Maurya will stay as Deputy Chief Minister or any other leader will replace him. According to the sources, Maurya can still take the legislative council route.

Yogi Adityanath served on the legislative council before he contested his first assembly election, which he won from the Gorakhpur Urban constituency.

The BJP won 255 assembly seats in Uttar Pradesh. The saffron party’s allies Apna Dal (S) and Nishad Party bagged 12 seats and six seats respectively.

The Samajwadi Party came a distant second winning 111 seats and its alliance partners Suheldev Bharatiya Samaj Party and Rashtriya Lok Dal got six and eight seats respectively.

The Congress and the Jansatta Dal got two seats each and the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) bagged just one seat.
