Congress leader Udit Raj on Wednesday launched a strong attack on party colleague Shashi Tharoor for praising Prime Minister Narendra Modi during an international visit. Raj accused Tharoor of acting like a “super spokesperson of the BJP” and claimed he betrayed the Congress legacy.
Tharoor, who is heading a multi-party delegation as part of India’s global outreach programme, made statements in Panama applauding India’s military response to terrorism under the Modi government. His remarks sparked backlash from within his own party and now Udit has spoken against it.
Udit Raj Calls Shashi Tharoor ‘BJP Spokesperson’
Udit Raj told ANI, “Shashi Tharoor is the super spokesperson of the BJP. What BJP leaders are not saying, he’s saying it all for them. Does he even know what the earlier governments used to do? They (the Central government) are taking credit for the Indian Armed Forces.”
In Panama, Tharoor praised recent military actions. He spoke about the 2016 surgical strikes and the 2019 Balakot airstrikes. He said, “Terrorists have also realised they will have a price to pay... For the first time, India breached the Line of Control... This time, we have gone beyond both the LoC and the international border... We struck at the Punjabi heartland of Pakistan.”

Raj Hits Back Over Congress Legacy
Raj fired back on social media as he accused Tharoor of ignoring military achievements from the Congress era. He reminded everyone of the party’s past victories and said Congress never used the Army’s work for political gain.
In his X post, he wrote, “How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi, India never crossed LoC and the International border? In 1965, the Indian Army entered Pakistan at multiple points. In 1971, India split Pakistan into two. Even during the UPA era, surgical strikes were carried out, we just didn’t use them for political mileage.”
Raj also questioned Tharoor’s loyalty to the party. He said, “How could you be so dishonest to the party which gave you so much?”

Alas ! I could prevail upon PM Modi to declare you as super spokesperson of BJP , even declaring as foreign minister before landing in India . How could you denigrate the golden history of Congress by saying that before PM Modi , India never crossed LOC… https://t.co/c88b8rX2bq
Notably, Tharoor was not Congress’s official choice for the outreach delegation. Despite this, he is leading the trip and drawing attention with remarks that have stirred up internal rifts.
This clash adds to a string of recent tensions inside the Congress party. With political shifts happening frequently, the timing of this feud could spell deeper trouble for the party ahead of future elections.
Tharoor has not responded to Udit Raj’s criticism yet. However, the fallout from this public confrontation may continue to grow, especially as the Congress faces increasing pressure to stay united in the lead-up to key battles at the ballot box.
