Congress MP Shashi Tharoor sparked buzz with his sharp take on US leadership by subtly calling out former President Donald Trump during a recent talk. While he said he shouldn’t comment on foreign leaders as an Indian MP, Tharoor didn’t hold back.
Shashi Tharoor Says Donald Trump Lacks Class
He said, “I shouldn't be commenting on political leaders in foreign countries on their soil. But having said that, people have their political preferences... I had the great honour of meeting four or five American presidents… both the Bushes, with Clinton, much more briefly with Obama.”
He praised them all regardless of party for having “a certain class, a certain distinction.” He added they carried political heft, statesman-like gravitas, and intellectual quality. Then came the stinger: “I find [those qualities] woefully lacking in this gentleman.”
Tharoor didn’t name Trump directly but made his comparison crystal clear. He stressed it wasn’t about politics but personality. He explained, “Two Republicans on that list and two Democrats. I don’t pay taxes here. So I don’t care if they’re lower or higher… I’m not seeking to be an immigrant here… I’m not worried about their stand on immigration.”
He said what bothered him was more personal. Tharoor revealed how the past leaders he met stood out as refined and grounded. He concluded, “Just the personal manner strikes me as not entirely agreeable or pleasant.”
Congress MP Recently Took Another Dig At Trump
The Congress MP also took a dig at Trump’s past claim of mediating tensions between India and Pakistan.
He said, “There’s been no formal process of mediation, either requested or conducted. You call me, I tell you what I’m doing and why I’m doing it, and that’s it… Then if you want to go and repeat that to somebody else, and they take certain consequences as a result of that, is that called mediation? I don’t think so. Not in my vocabulary.”
Tharoor also pointed out that India maintained open communication with world leaders, especially during tense times. He added, “Our foreign minister, if I remember correctly, put it on his own Twitter account every time he had a call with another foreign minister.”
Donald Trump had earlier credited himself for easing post-Operation Sindoor hostilities. Tharoor dismissed that narrative outright.
